How to Share a Wi-Fi Network Securely with Nearby iOS Devices

Sharing your Wi-Fi password doesn’t have to mean typing it out or sending it in a message. Apple provides two secure ways to share Wi-Fi access with nearby devices: Automatic Wi-Fi Sharing and QR code sharing. Follow the steps below.

Method 1: Share Wi-Fi Automatically (Recommended)

This is the fastest and most secure method for iPhones and iPads running modern versions of iOS.

Requirements

v Both devices must be near each other

v Both devices must have:

§  Wi-Fi turned ON

§  Bluetooth turned ON

v You must be already connected to the Wi-Fi network

v The recipient must be saved in your Contacts (with their Apple ID email or phone number)

Step-by-Step

  1. Unlock your iPhone and stay connected to the Wi-Fi network you want to share.

  2. On the other iPhone or iPad, go to:

               Settings → Wi-Fi

  3. The recipient selects the same Wi-Fi network.

4 A Wi-Fi Password Sharing pop-up appears on your screen.

   5. Tap Share Password.

   6. Wait for confirmation, then tap Done.

The password is shared securely and is never displayed on either device.

Method 2: Share Wi-Fi Using a QR Code (iOS 18+ or Router App)

If automatic sharing doesn’t work, QR codes provide a great alternative.

Option A: Using Your Router’s App

(Some routers allow QR sharing directly.)

1. Open your router’s app (e.g., Eero, Netgear, TP-Link).

2. Locate the Wi-Fi sharing or guest access section.

3.Generate a QR code.

4.Ask the other person to:

     §  Open the Camera app

     §  Scan the QR code

5. Tap Join Network when prompted.

Option B: Using a QR Code Generator App (Manual Method)

1. Install a trusted Wi-Fi QR code app from the App Store.

2. Enter:

  §  Network name (SSID)

  §  Password

  §  Security type (WPA/WPA2/WPA3)

3. Generate the QR code.

4. The guest scans it using the Camera app.

⚠️ Only use QR code apps from reputable developers.

Security Tips

§  Avoid sending Wi-Fi passwords via text or email

§  Use Guest Networks for visitors when possible

§  Change your Wi-Fi password periodically

§  Disable guest access when no longer needed

Quick Troubleshooting

§  If the share doesn’t appear:

§ Turn Bluetooth off and back on

§ Lock and unlock both devices

§  Ensure both devices are updated to the latest iOS version

Final Tip

Automatic Wi-Fi sharing is Apple’s most secure and seamless option. QR codes are best for non-Apple devices or temporary access.
