How to Lock a Folder with a Password on Mac Using Disk Utility

 

·     Example: macOS (Mojave 10.14) to (Sonoma 14)

·     Steps:

 

1.  Launch the Disk Utility:

·     Open Disk Utility by Searching for it using Spotlight or going to Applications > Utilities.

 

  

 

2.  Create a New Disk image:

·     In Disk Utility, click on File in the menu.

·     Choose New Image and then select Image from Folder.

 

 

3.  Select Your Folder:

·     Find and select the folder you want to lock with a password.

·     Click Choose to proceed.

   

 

4.  Name and Choose Storage Location:

·     Pick a name for your encrypted disk image.

·     Select where you want to save this locked image on your Mac.

  

 

5.  Choose Encryption Settings:

·     Click the Encryption dropdown and select an encryption option.

·     For speed and security, Apple recommends 128-bit AES encryption.

 

 

6.  Set Your Password:

·     Type in your desired password and confirm it.

·     You can use the key icon to generate a strong password automatically.

 

      

 

7.  Select the Disk Image Format:

·     Under Image Format, choose read/write to allow adding and editing files inside the folder.

·     Click Save to proceed.

 

  

8.  Wait for the Disk Image Create:

·     Wait until the disk image is created. Once it’s finished, click Done.
