How to Free Up Disk Space on macOS

Running out of disk space on your Mac can slow down performance, prevent updates, and cause apps to misbehave. macOS includes powerful built-in tools that make it easy to find and remove unnecessary files. Follow these steps to free up disk space safely and efficiently.

Step 1: Check Your Storage Usage

Before deleting anything, see what’s taking up space.

  1. Click the Apple menu () in the top-left corner.

  2. Select System Settings (or System Preferences on older macOS versions).

  3. Go to General → Storage.

macOS will analyze your disk and show how much space is used by apps, documents, photos, system data, and more.

Step 2: Use Storage Management Recommendations

At the top of the Storage window, macOS displays Recommendations.

   1. Review options like Store in iCloud, Optimize Storage, and Empty Trash Automatically.

  2. Turn on the recommendations that fit your needs.

These tools help reduce clutter without manually searching for files.

Step 3: Remove Large Files

Large files often consume space quickly.

    1. In Storage, click Documents.

   2. Open the Large Files section.

   3. Sort files by size and delete items you no longer need.

Always double-check important documents before deleting.

Step 4: Uninstall Unused Applications

Apps you no longer use can take up several gigabytes.

   1. In Storage, select Applications.

  2. Review the list and identify unused apps.

  3. Select an app and click Delete.

For third-party apps, ensure no leftover files remain if the app includes its own uninstaller.

Step 5: Clear System Cache Files

Cache files build up over time.

  1. Open Finder.

  2. Click Go → Go to Folder from the menu bar.

  3. Enter ~/Library/Caches and press Enter.

  4. Delete the contents inside the cache folders (not the folders themselves).

This can safely free up space without affecting system stability.

Step 6: Review and Delete Old Downloads

The Downloads folder often contains forgotten files.

  1. Open Finder → Downloads.

  2. Sort files by date or size.

  3. Delete installers, ZIP files, and old documents you no longer need.

Step 7: Empty the Trash

Deleted files still take up space until the Trash is emptied.

  1. Right-click the Trash icon in the Dock.

  2. Select Empty Trash.

You can also enable Empty Trash Automatically from Storage Management.

Step 8: Restart Your Mac

Restarting helps macOS clear temporary system files and finalize storage cleanup.

💡Final Tip

Make it a habit to check Storage Management every few months. Regular cleanup keeps your Mac fast, responsive, and ready for updates 🚀
