to Fix a Mac That Won’t Shut Down

Steps:
1.
Force
Quit Apps:
If an app is frozen, it might be blocking shutdown.
·
Press
Option + Command + Esc.
·
Select
the app from the list.
·
Click
Force Quit.
·
Repeat
for other apps if needed.
2.
Use
a Keyboard Shortcut:
·
Press
Control + Option + Command + Power button.
·
Confirm
by clicking Shut Down or pressing Enter.
3.
Unplug
Accessories:
External devices can sometimes cause issues.
·
Disconnect
all USB devices (printer, drives, etc.).
·
Try
shutting down again.
4.
Check
for Problem Apps:
Update or remove apps that may be causing trouble.

Open
App Store > Updates.
·
Update
all apps.
5.
Start
in Safe Mode:
Safe Mode runs only essential software.
Apple Silicon
Macs:
·
Shut
down your Mac.

Intel Macs:

Restart
and hold Shift until the login screen.

Boot
into Recovery Mode (Command + R at startup).
·
Open
Disk Utility.
·
Select
your main disk and click First Aid.
7.
Use
Recovery Mode:
It helpful for deeper troubleshooting.
·
Shut
down your Mac.
·
Turn
it on and hold Command + R.
·
Use
tools in the macOS Utilities windows.
8.
Reset
PRAM/NVRAM:
For Intel Mac:

Turn
Off your Mac.
·
Turn
it on and immediately hold Option + Command + P + R.
·
Hold
until your Mac restarts twice.
Note:
M1/M2 Macs reset this automatically during restart.
9.
Force
Shutdown (Last Option):
Only use this if nothing else work.
