How to Erase a Mac Hard Drive Using Disk Utility

 

·     Example: Mac (Intel-Based Macs)

·     Steps:

 

1.  Start in Recovery Mode:

·     Turn on your Mac and hold Command + R until the Apple logo appears.

 

    

 

2.  Sign in:

·     Enter your Mac Password or Apple ID, if asked.

 

3.  Open Disk Utility:

·     On the recovery screen, click Disk Utility and then hit Continue.

 

                     

 

4.  Choose Your Drive:

·     In the sidebar, pick your main drive (usually called Macintosh HD).

 

5.  Click Erase:

·     Tap the Erase button at the top.

 

6.  Set Format and Name:

·     Choose format:

·     Use APFS (for newer macOS) or

·     Mac OS Extended (Journaled) (for older systems).

·     Give your drive a name (like Macintosh HD or New Start).

 

7.  Confirm Erase:

·     Click Erase or Erase Volume Group.

 

          

 

8.  Done:

·     When finished, close Disk Utility, go back to the main menu, and restart your mac.
