How to use Messages via satellite

1Step 1. No Cellular/Wi-Fi?

·      When your iPhone detects no cellular or Wi-Fi signal, it alerts you that you can send messages via satellite (this alert appears on the Lock Screen or when you open the Messages app).

Step 2. Satellite Options

When connected to a satellite, you can:

·      Text emergency services (Emergency SOS).

·      Use Roadside Assistance.

·      Share your location via Find My (if available).

Step 3. Send a Message

1.    Open the Messages app.

2.    Follow the instructions to connect to a satellite.

3.    If you are using iPhone 14 Pro or later, the Dynamic Island will

·      show signal strength and

·      Give directions (Like turning left or right) to improve connection.

Step 4. Receive Messages

·      Once connected, you’ll receive SMS messages from emergency contacts or family members.

·      iMessages will only arrive if the sender taps "Send via Satellite" under their message bubble."

Step 5. Message Speed

·      In open areas, messages take about 30 seconds to send.

·      Under light trees, it may take over a minute.

·      Heavy obstructions (dense trees, buildings) might block the connection entirely.

Step 6. Limited Features

You cannot send or receive:

·      Photos

·      Videos

·      Audio messages

·      Stickers

·      Group messages via satellite.

Step 7. Using SMS via Satellite

·      If iMessage fails (e.g., the recipient doesn't have iOS 18 or isn't using an Apple device), the message will be sent as an SMS via satellite.
