How to Fix Mac USB Ports Not Working

 

·     Example: Mac

·     Steps:

 

1.  Restart Your MacBook:

·     Click the Apple Menu (top-left) and choose Restart.

·     Wait for the Mac to Reboot.

·     After it’s back on, plug a USB device in and check the port.

 

            

 

2.  Check for Software Updates

·     Click the Apple menu → System Settings.

 

         

 

·     Go to General → Software Update.

 

        

 

·     If an Update is available, tap Update Now and follow the prompts.

 

      

·     Restart you Mac when the update finishes, then test the USB port.

 

3.  Reset the SMC

Resetting the SMC can resolve hardware problems like malfunctioning USB ports by clearing corrupted settings.

For MacBooks with non-removable batteries:

·     Shut down your mac.

 

         

 

·     Press and hold Shift + Command + Option + Power button for 10 seconds.

 

         

 

·     Release all keys.

·     Press the Power button to turn it back on.

 

For MacBook with Removeable batteries (older models):

·     Shut down your Mac.

 

          

 

·     Take out the Battery.

 

         

 

·     Hold the Power button for 5 second.

 

      

·     Put the battery back in.

 

             

 

·     Press Power to turn on.

 

        

 

4.  Clearing the PRAM or NVRAM

Resetting PRAM/NVRAM can fix USB port problems by clearing stored configurations related to hardware.

 

For Intel Mac:

·     Turn Off your Mac.

 

 

·     Turn it on and immediately hold Option + Command + P + R.

 

          

 

·     Hold until your Mac restarts twice.

 

Note: M1/M2 Macs reset this automatically during restart.
